Honestly? It will never work, and it's a horrible idea. I mean, I know that politicians only do things for votes, because Mum drilled that into my head, but don't these people ever think?

How are they even planning on accounting for the Muggleborn children who don't know what they're doing? Or any of the others for whom magic is such an integral part of their life that they can't even keep track of it?

I hope Mum sends me some of the Muggle coverage soon. I'm already bracing myself for the misinformation and stupidity.

I doubt they actually think they can enforce. I imagine the main idea's to scare people into thinking they will.

I suppose that's true. But I'm doubtful that that's their purpose.

I'm inclined to agree. What I think is especially likely is, as Aldric said, that they may well not even realize what they're up against. Considering there's been almost no dialogue between the two governments since the Revelation, it seems unlikely that the Irish have the slightest conception of what they're up against, even taking into account the exchange of information that obviously takes place between the UK and Ireland on a regular basis. Furthermore, they may be inclined, as a very frightened, very hostile population, to regard any information that lends the Wizarding population an edge with suspicion, just as they would arguments that not every witch and wizard (indeed, not most) wants to kill them. This is a bluffing game. I don't think they particularly want the law to succeed; after all, if witches and wizards are practicing illegally, it gives them an excuse to show them no mercy. Before it was a crime against humanity. But if the entire country is full of fugitives, of implicit terrorists...

I... well, I guess I can't really find anything wrong with that argument, actually. It makes sense, unfortunately. But there's no "best possible outcome" either way. If they could, theoretically, enforce it, the backlash would be epic. And Els makes a very good point: it's an excuse. Even the slightest bit of magic -- registered or not -- is going to be an issue. And if the Irish wizards see what this really is... I don't really want to think about what's going to happen.

They've signed someone's death warrant, but I'm not certain whose it is yet.

That's the main problem, isn't it -- they have no way of tracking those things like the Ministry of Magic does, and even with the Statute of Secrecy and the Decree of Underage Wizards, the system is still slightly flawed. It's just going to upset people more and not achieve anything positive. It's a show of power. A threat, if you will. Though I wonder how many people will actually be able to see that and how many people will try to blast the Irish parliament.

I think they're banking on it reassuring the Muggles, who are, after all, the ones who vote.

I wouldn't consider it a credible threat if that was their intention, and if a threat isn't credible, then it really doesn't matter if it was made at all.

I'm not sure they even realize how... bollocks their plan is.
